Saving in Sacramento

Those who know me best can tell you my one pet peeve: Unkempt feet. Sandal season is nearing and it's always something I notice on people - their heels, toes, and ankles. There is nothing that makes me cringe quite like the look of dirty, scaly, calloused toes and heels. It makes me want to take a foot stone and cuticle clippers to their feet myself. And please don't get me wrong - I'm not suggesting people go out and pay for pedicures to keep their feet looking nice. I haven't had a pedicure in about two years - I'm very much a proponent of doing it yourself! I take extra care of my feet because it's a reflection on the person and their personal habits. There's nothing like seeing an extraordinarily beautiful woman and then looking down to see uncared for feet.

My goodness, that was a tangent that I can go on and on about (like I said, seriously a pet peeve). So, that said, it is exciting for me to tell you about Dr. Hess Udder Ointment because I think it will help everyone get on the fast-track to sandal-ready feet!

Dr. Hess Udder Ointment is a fantastic ointment-based salve containing skin moisturizers and softeners, plus Menthyl Salicylate (which gives your skin a cool, tingly feeling after application). By the name, I'm sure you can tell that it was originally created for cattle care, but it was soon discovered how well it worked  on the farmers' hands, which then led to it becoming a home remedy in addition to it's original use.

Dr. Hess Udder Ointment is fabulous for your feet, and I firmly believe that it is better than anything else on the market for dry, cracked, callus, and otherwise difficult skin. Dr. Hess also offers the Udder Ointment for Baby Butts for baby's daiper area. Normally I've used Beaudroux's Butt Paste, but I much prefer the texture, scent, and results of Dr. Hess Ointment for Baby Butts.

As if there was nothing this product couldn't do, there is also an Udder Stick for your lips! And it's great...it goes on smooth and has a great scent. My husband, who is a lip balm snob and only uses Carmex if and when he has to, was even willing to consider switching loyalty.

And you don't have to take my word for it, either. Dr. Hess Udder Ointment went was discontinued in the late 90's, but was resurrected shortly after when loyal fans and testimonials started pouring in on just how fabulous this product is.

You can purchase any of these Dr. Hess Udder Ointment products on their site, and, if you're lucky, in scattered retail stores across the country.

Do you suffer from dry skin? The winter time is when my skin is at it's worst. My hands get dry and flaky and sometimes the skin over my knuckles will crack. I was constantly applying lotions, but they never seemed to really help. It seemed like such a waste of time. I received Dr. Hess Udder Ointment to try out and it has really made a difference. My skin is no longer flaky or cracked.  It is now soft and smooth. I just apply it before I go to bed and wake up with great skin the next morning. It also works great on my feet and elbows.  I like that it absorbs really fast. I also like that it does not leave my skin feeling greasy once it is absorbs. It also worked wonders on my cuticles. It softened the skin better than any of the other cuticle product I have tried. I love it.

For over 100 years, Dr. Hess Products have been providing relief for all skin needs. Originally developed for cow's udders in the early 1900's, farmers were soon remarking on the incredible healing effects it was having on their own skin. Soon it was a staple in every medicine cabinet.

Dr. Hess Udder Ointment is less greasy, absorbs quicker and smells better than other comparable products on the market. Subscribe to our email list to receive coupons and product updates!

Why does it work so well?
Dr Hess Udder Ointmentworks so effectively because it also contains an ingredient which opens skin pores.  Once the pores are open, the 13 emollients are allowed to enter deep into the skin and begin the healing process.

I also got to try out Dr. Hess Udder Sticks. These also worked great on my chapped lips. My son has had really bad dry cracked lips for the last couple of weeks so I started using Udder Sticks on him and he no longer has dry or chapped lips. The newest addition to the Dr. Hess Udder Ointment line includes a soothing Lip Balm for dry and chapped lips. Based upon the original formula and with added sunscreen the Udder Stick will keep your lips protected and “udderly” smooth!

Dr. Hess Udder Ointment for Baby Butts
will soothe and relieve your babies diaper rash keeping your baby “udderly” happy! Use to treat and prevent your babies diaper rash quickly. Don't forget to order an extra for your "on the go" diaper bag.

Dr. Hess Udder Ointment has been around quite a long time. The company was started in the Early 1900’s by Dr. Gilbert Hess, a MD and veterinarian. The company has sent countless cases to our soldiers in Iraq who deal with a very harsh environment, especially on the skin. They also participate in many other charities such as cancer clinics.

I have recently had the wonderful opportunity to try some of this product. First of all I would like to tell you that this product is not a new one. It has been around for years. My mother and grandmother grew up using it. It is an amazing invention. It works great for dry chapped skin, diaper rash, eczema, psoriasis, cracked heels and cuticles, chapped lips, and much more. I have been using this product for a week now and my lips have never been so soft. I put it on about twice a day and it works great. Especially now with the cold winter weather we are having. I have struggled in the past trying to keep my lips from cracking and splitting.

My 15 year old daughter has Eczema. She has struggled with it since she was born. The doctors told me that she would out grow it but has not so far. I gave her some to try and she has been putting in on the dry, itchy, red, scaly patches on her arms and legs (where she breaks out most) for a week now and you can hardly tell she has it anymore. She is ecstatic!! Being in High School she has been teased about it frequently. We have taken her to numerous dermatologists trying to find something to treat it and make it less visible. She is so happy that we have finally found something.

I have also been having my husband using it on his hands. He is an aircraft mechanic and constantly has his hands in different chemicals that are very drying. On top of that he winter air is harsh on them and he will get eczema patches on them. The Udder Ointment has helped that immensely. You can order some of this product on their website at: www.udderointment.com.

Dr. Hess: Udder Ointment is offering one lucky reader has the opportunity to win a 2 oz. of the Udder Ointment, 2 oz. of the Udder Ointment for Baby Butts, and two Udder Sticks for the lips with sunscreen. I encourage you to try this for yourself. It works wonderfully.

A century ago, a special salve was created for the overworked udders of cows. But something unexpected happened: the farmers who were applying it saw and felt a remarkably difference in the skin on their hands.

Today, Dr. Hess Udder Ointment's name hasn't changed, but its fan base has. The human users of this creamy balm outnumber bovine ones, due to its ability to address multiple skin issues.

Most fans became such because of what Udder Ointment does for even the most devastating dryness, whether it's in patches on the body or wreaking havoc on lips. The formula is also praised for its effects on chafing, burns, cracked heels, and even eczema.

You may even want to try it on your... um... udders.

Udder Ointment may seem silly or unglamorous, but we've always put results above image. It's impossible not to once you see what it can do.

How does one treat chronically dry skin?
January 20th, 2010

My skin tends to be very dry and it only gets worse during the winter months. Are there any good (affordable) skin products that provide very-dry skin with necessary relief? I use a lotion that contains AHAs for my KP so I can understand how it may dry up my skin even more.

I would also appreciate any advice for home remedies or any supplements that I can take to better my skin. By the way, I do keep hydrated so I know that my dry skin is not a result of inadequate water intake.
Thanks!

I would suggest you use Dr Hess Udder Ointment found at www.udderointment.com. It is amazing on all skin conditions including dry skin, eczema, diaper rash, chafing, cuts, burns…you name it. It’s been around for 100 years and is an old tried and true remedy that works fantastic on skin. Sign up as a subscriber and they will send you a coupon code for 20% off your order!

If you suffer from extremely dry skin that leaves you with painful cuts and scrapes, you might be in need of the Udder Ointment. The ointment comes from Dr.Hess and has a long history of providing relief to cows and humans alike. The brand originally started by selling their product to farmers for the treatment of dryness in cows, however soon they realized its healing effects.  It might seems that the brand almost vanished was it not for their loyal following and demand from customers to not only keep providing them with the ointment but to expand into different products as well.

You probably recognize Dr.Hess from your childhood and even though I just discovered the brand I can say it truly does have certain healing powers. I spend a good portion of my time designing jewelry and some of it is made from wire, which cuts my hands and dries up my skin. I have also had serious dry skin since I was a child and I am glad to have been alerted to the brand and the relief it can provide.  If it was good enough for the cows and their farmers tough skin, it must be good enough for the delicate skin of a baby.

You should also try their lip balm and if you are a mom there is Udder Ointment for your baby’s diaper rash.

The Secret To Skin That’s Udderly Smooth

The most potent beauty products are often the haphazard result of real-life experiences in the field: After years of mixing fermented rice water, a sake maker notices that his hands look and feel smoother; a vintner inadvertently exposed to the powerful antioxidants found in grapeseed polyphenols experiences something similar. And so it went at the turn of the twentieth century with Dr. Hess Udder Ointment.

Developed by a veterinary and medical doctor in Ohio circa 1893, the salve was originally intended to soothe dairy cattle. But its ability to provide relief from eczema, psoriasis, cracked heels and cuticles, chapped lips, and a host of other human ailments turned it into a hot commodity both on and off the farm. After changing ownership, the brand was discontinued in 1999, only to be resurrected recently by popular demand. If the winter weather is taking a toll on your skin and nothing seems to be working, consider making the, ahem, mooove.

Having dry skin can be a curse. I have excessively dry skin and there are times where my skin is so dry and cracked that it hurts. The winter time is the worst for me. I received some of Dr. Hess's Udder Ointment for Dry Skin and I've been using it on my elbows for a few weeks now. Now when I look at my elbows, I see skin instead of something that resembles a patch of desert.

Another problem I have is chapped lips. Again, this is most difficult to deal with in the winter. My lips are so thankful for Dr. Hess! I've been using this chapstick for a few weeks now, once in the morning and once at night and I can tell a real difference in the way my lips look and feel.

Oh yes, it's the time of year when my skin is ugly and nasty. I try my hardest to keep it looking nice, but I think I need to be more disciplined with myself in applying daily. I received a nice bundle of products from Dr. Hess to give to the test during these winter months. What's nice about these products is that they contain almost all natural skin healing ingredients.

Some of the products we've been using a lot is the Dr. Hess Udder Stick, chap stick that really does heal. My son has had the worst chapped lips, every morning he wakes with horribly cracked, bleeding lips. He's been applying this and it's helped immensely during the night and while wearing during the day he heals very quickly. I'm glad to have something that I can give him to carry around that I know isn't harmful to him. I've also been using the chap stick which I too like, and the Udder Ointment for dry skin on my legs. Though I have yet to use it consistently for a period of time, it does help in keeping them moisturized to prevent a scaly look and I hope to have a great product to use during these winter months. Dr. Hess also has baby rash ointment to use that looks wonderfully soothing for babies bum.

Dr. Hess products come in different sizes for traveling or for at home use. Dr. Hess products are "Pharmacist recommended skin cream for dry skin, chapped lips, cracked heels, diaper rash, athletic chafing, eczema, burns, abrasions and more."

This time of year (fall and winter) makes my skin extremely dry. My skin, especially on my hands, gets so bad that they actually crack and bleed. I often sleep with cotton gloves on (after applying lotion) to try to help them heal.

So of course when we got the chance to sample some Dr. Hess Udder Ointment, I was very excited. I had heard great things about it, and even though it was originally made for udders, it works wonders on hands! It does seem to do a great job, being a bit thicker than a regular lotion. It has a different, but pleasant smell, that is hard to describe. It’s somewhat minty, but not really minty. Also, it doesn’t take much ointment to cover the area. This is a plus since it means a little will go a long way! We also really liked the story of the product.

Made in the USA (in Utah), and by those who really care about the product! It has been great for my poor, cracked skin, and I can see why they were so passionate about trying to save the product. I for one am glad they did. You can buy Dr. Hess Udder Ointment online at the Dr. Hess website. They also offer a free sample (including shipping) so you can try it for yourself before you buy! Very wish list worthy indeed.

6ozjarsingle Like Udder Magic

The first time I heard my small, diaper-clad daughter say, “Mommy, my bum hurts,”  I thought it was kind of cute.  Almost any use of the word “bum” by a child under two years old is funny.  But the more she complained, the less amusing it became, and the more I stepped up my search for an effective diaper cream.  Enter Dr. Hess Udder Ointment for Baby Butts!  The Dr. Hess ointment mixologists will tell you that it contains all kinds of emollients along with the blood circulating and oxygenating ingredient, Menthyl Saliclate.  I will tell you that it’s effective on the bum.  And to combat dry skin for the rest of the family, the original Udder Ointment can’t be beat.  Check out www.udderointment.com to order.  $14.99 for 6 oz bottle or $6.99 for 2 oz.

Oh, and the Dr. Hess Udder Stick for dry and chapped lips is dreamy.

Couple brings back 'udderly' amazing product
By Keith McCord
NORTH SALT LAKE -- In 1893, a scientist and veterinarian named Gilbert Hess teamed up with businessman J.L. Clark and started selling a product in Ashland, Ohio. They called it Udder Ointment.

With daily milking, dairy farmers noticed the cows udders would become chapped and uncomfortable. So, Hess and Clark developed a soothing salve for farmers to apply.Clark was Polly Tribe's great-grandfather. She now lives in Utah.

"The farmers were noticing how quickly their hands were healing and staying healed from the winter elements and just the harshness of that industry," Polly says.Soon Udder Ointment was in everyone's medicine cabinet. From coast to coast, it became the go-to remedy."Any skin condition, it was so quickly healing that it was used by thousands," Polly says. Read More...

An ointment that was once used to heal dairy cow's chapped udders is now known as a human healing sensation for chapped hands. Dr. Hess’s Udder Ointment has been around for over a hundred years, which is no wonder with its therapeutic recipe and positive results.

Established in 1897 by Dr. Gilbert Hess and, J. L. Clark , Dr. Hess's Udder Ointment was developed for treating chapped teats and udders of dairy cattle. Farmers using the products quickly realized the improvement of their own dry, chapped hands and from there the rest is history. Read More...

Udder Ointment Gives Relief to Humans and Cows Alike

In 1893, Dr. Gilbert Hess and businessman J.L. Clark teamed up to market Udder Ointment, invented to soothe dairy cows' chapped udders. Now, Dr. Hess Udder Ointment is a line of human products owned by Salt Lakers Polly Clark Tribe (J.L.'s great grandaughter) and her husband Tyler. Read more...

Davis County Clipper - Feb 5, 2008

What was once good for the cows is now offering a little relief to the soldiers overseas.Tyler and Polly Tribe, North Salt Lake residents and the current distributors of Dr. Hess’s Udder Ointment, recently shipped nearly a hundred jars of the ointment to a unit currently stationed in  Afghanistan. The soldier requested the donation through his wife,  another local resident.  “After they would go out on a mission, everyone’s skin would be all dry and cracked,” said Tyler, owner of Tribe 5 LLC. “They needed something that would help.”  Udder Ointment, which was originally created in 1893 to help farmers heal cows’ chapped udders, is now commonly used to heal chronic dryness and even small cuts in people. The Tribe family donates the product about five or six times a year to groups such as military units and senior care centers that make a request. “If there are causes that could use it, we absolutely love to help out,” said Tribe. “We like to be involved in the community.”

Udder Ointment was invented by Polly’s great grandfather, Dr. Gilbert Hess, and the Tribes recently began producing and distributing the product after its parent company discontinued it several years ago.  Tribe said that the family has tried to continue Dr. Hess’s sense of service. Hess and his partner, a businessman named J.L. Clark, built the Ashland Hospital in Ohio, started a student endowment, and supported several charities including the County Children’s Home and the American Red Cross. “There are family stories about how Dr. Hess would go to the grocery store, buy a shopping cart full of steaks, and hand them out to people who needed them as he went home,” said Tribe. “He knew he had been given something, and he thought giving back was the right thing to do.”

Ashland Times-Gazette - Oct. 17, 2007
Clark Descendant Revives Popular Cream
By Ginger Christ

A great-gradndaughter of J.L. Clark is bringing back Dr. Hess Udder Ointment, a cream originally formulated for use on cattle that became popular for helping prevent chapping on humans. Dr. Gilbert Hess and J.L. Clark may have passed on, but their legacy remains in Ashland.

The infamous duo teamed up in 1893 to form the Hess & Clark company in Ashland, using Hess' training as a medical doctor and veterinarian and Clark's business savvy to produce and sell a successful line of farm remedies.
Most notable among them was Udder Ointment. Originally developed for treating chapped udders of dairy cattle, Udder Ointment quickly became popular with farmers who noticed how it helped prevent chapping and spurred healing of cuts on their hands.

Polly Clark Tribe, the great-granddaughter of Clark, has recreated Dr. Hess Udder Ointment, a staple of the old company. Udder Ointment is advertised as a cure-all for dry skin, hands, chapped lips and cracked cuticles.

"It's something that's been in our family forever and I wanted to bring it back," said Tribe. "We were all sad when the current owners stopped making it."
After initially learning the line was being discontinued by the current owners of the business, Tribe purchased as many jars as she could, relying largely on eBay to obtain the ointment.

Tribe and her family live in Utah and created a new company, Tribe 5 LLC, to market the product. The product is being sold in Ashland first and is available at Towne Pharmacy & Home Health Care Center in town and also at the Medicine Shoppe in Mansfield. "Having had its origination there, we want to market it there pretty heavily," said Tribe on Ashland. "There's a lot of recognition," said Matt Maiyer, a pharmacist at Towne Pharmacy. "Everybody, even in Mansfield, knows where it came from."

Despite various ownership transfers, the Hess & Clark facility on Orange and Seventh streets remained in operation until 2003. At the time of its closing, the facility was owned by United Agri Products, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the multi-billion dollar ConAgra Foods.

Tribe may have obtained the rights to the product but launching the line wasn't quite as simple. The original udder ointment formula had been lost over the years.
Tribe gathered and analyzed all of the marketing materials dating back to 1910 and the jar labels to try to determine the recipe for success. She then contracted a laboratory to reverse engineer the ointment and ensure the finished product was the right color, the right smell and had the right healing properties.
"It was the best healing ointment I'd ever used," said Tribe.
